Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao: Telangana’s First Chief Minister

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) took oath as the first Chief Minister of Telangana on June 2, 2014, following the creation of the new state. As the founder of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), he played a central role in the Telangana statehood movement.

Early Life

Born on February 17, 1954, in Chintamadaka village, Medak district, KCR completed his MA in Telugu Literature from Osmania University, Hyderabad. He is married and has a son, K. T. Rama Rao (MLA from Sircilla), and a daughter, Kalvakuntla Kavitha (MP from Nizamabad).

Political Journey

KCR began his political career with the Congress party. He later joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and won his first election in 1983. He subsequently returned to Congress and served as a minister in the governments led by N. T. Rama Rao and N. Chandrababu Naidu.

In 1999, he left Congress and founded the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to actively pursue the demand for a separate Telangana state.

Tenure as Chief Minister

After the formation of Telangana in 2014, KCR assumed office as the state’s first Chief Minister under the TRS banner. He was re-elected in 2018. During his tenure, several welfare schemes were introduced:

  • Rythu Bandhu: Direct financial support to farmers.
  • Kalyana Lakshmi / Shaadi Mubarak: Financial assistance to newlywed women.
  • Aasara Pension: Pension schemes for senior citizens.
  • Double Bedroom Housing: Affordable homes for economically weaker sections.
  • Dalit Bandhu: Financial assistance for Dalit families.

He also initiated cultural and policy measures, such as declaring Bathukamma a state festival and recognizing Urdu as the second official language of Telangana.

Political Legacy

KCR has actively involved his children in politics. K. T. Rama Rao serves as MLA from Sircilla, while Kalvakuntla Kavitha is MP from Nizamabad.

Recent Developments

In the 2023 Assembly elections, the TRS faced electoral setbacks. Subsequently, KCR renamed the party to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). He currently represents the Gajwel constituency as an MLA

KCR remains a pivotal figure in Telangana’s political history, having led the statehood movement, implemented major welfare initiatives, and established a political legacy through his family’s continued presence in regional politics.
