Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ Tariffs: 100% Tariffs on India, 50% on EU—White House Confirms Trade Shake-Up

President Trump’s new reciprocal tariffs, set for April 2, will impose 100% tariffs on Indian goods and 50% on EU products. The White House insists these measures will restore trade fairness.

Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ Tariffs: 100% Tariffs on India, 50% on EU—White House Confirms Trade Shake-Up

In a major trade policy shift, the White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump will implement new reciprocal tariffs on April 2, a day he has called “Liberation Day.” The move is aimed at countering what the administration describes as “unfair trade practices” imposed by foreign nations on American products.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed on Monday that there will be no exemptions from these tariffs. “It’s time for reciprocity,” she stated, emphasizing that U.S. industries have suffered from disproportionate foreign tariffs for too long.

Key Tariffs in Focus

Holding a document listing tariffs imposed by various countries, Leavitt detailed how American goods face extreme import duties worldwide:

  • India: 100% tariff on American agricultural products
  • European Union: 50% tariff on American dairy
  • Japan: 700% tariff on American rice
  • Canada: Nearly 300% tariff on American butter and cheese

“This makes it virtually impossible for American products to be imported into these markets, and it puts a lot of Americans out of business and out of work over the past several decades,” Leavitt added.

Trump’s Tariff Strategy: A Fight for Fairness?

The Trump administration has long argued that these foreign tariffs put American businesses at a disadvantage. By imposing equivalent tariffs on imports from these nations, Trump aims to restore fairness in trade relations.

“Unfortunately, these countries have been ripping off our country for far too long… And they’ve made their disdain for the American worker quite clear,” Leavitt said.

While tariffs are often used to protect domestic industries, critics argue they can escalate trade wars and increase costs for consumers. Trump, however, remains firm on his stance that reciprocal tariffs are necessary to level the playing field.

Trade Barriers Report: An Extensive Review

Coinciding with the tariff announcement, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) released its annual National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers. The comprehensive 397-page report outlines barriers faced by U.S. exporters, including:

  • EU’s strict food safety regulations delaying approval of genetically modified crops
  • Canada’s supply management system imposing import quotas on dairy and poultry
  • China’s VAT rebate policies, which act as subsidies for local industries

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated, “No American President in modern history has recognized the wide-ranging and harmful foreign trade barriers American exporters face more than President Trump.”

Potential Impact on Global Trade

While Trump’s tariffs aim to protect American industries, experts warn that such aggressive measures could provoke retaliatory actions from trading partners. India, the EU, and Canada may respond with their own tariff hikes, potentially escalating into a broader trade conflict.

Additionally, the timing of these tariffs—just months before the U.S. presidential election—raises questions about their political motivation. With Trump campaigning on an “America First” platform, this move could appeal to voters concerned about domestic job losses and economic fairness.

As the U.S. prepares for the implementation of Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, businesses and trade partners worldwide are bracing for the consequences. While the administration sees these tariffs as a necessary correction to trade imbalances, the global economic repercussions remain uncertain.

With trade policies at the center of international relations, the coming months will reveal whether Trump’s strategy strengthens American industries—or ignites another wave of global trade tensions.
